The Verizon Phone Fiasco

Tim has been using the same phone since high school. It is battered and really outdated, and so we knew he really needed a new one ASAP. Well since I was arriving in two weeks anyway, we thought it would be nice for him to get the phones already so that when I got there I would already have something to use. So after doing some research, we decided on iPhone4’s because it has Skype video calls and we thought it might be kind of useful for deployment. Last week Tim went to Verizon and the Verizon person/people (let’s refer to them as VP for this post) told Timmy that he would get a better deal with the Motorola Droid 2 Global because it would have no problems being used anywhere in the world, so its better for someone deploying. Apparently the iPhone 4 wouldn’t work in the middle east or something unless it was jailbroken, but if we do that then we would lose warranty which is a deal-breaker for us. So the VP tells Timmy that the Droid 2 Global also has a buy-one-get-one-free promo so for the price of $199 we could get two, as opposed to $199 for just one iPhone. Tim thinks its a great deal so he comes back to me and reports it. Of course, I was a little iffy about this particular droid phone only because its huge and so square.. its a really masculine phone, not really my type. But hey, a good deal is a good deal and if it means we can save money and Timmy can use it for deployment then I’ll take it. Plus I learned that it comes in white and blue so I thought we could both get it in different colors and it would be so cute to have matching phones. So Tim goes back the following day and orders the two droids, and in the meantime, I go online shopping and get a pink and purple case for my phone in case I get bored with the white, and I get Timmy a black one.

Lo and behold the day for the pick-up comes and they tell Timmy that they were wrong, the Droid 2 Global isn’t a buy-one-get-one-free phone so he could only get one, and he was offered the LG Droid Vortex for free and they knocked 50 bucks off the total so he only spent $150 for both phones. Not bad, but now I’m supposed to get the white droid and Tim gets the black LG vortex. Tim accepts it, and I immediately got upset when he told me. First of all, the Global phone was supposed to be for deployment purposes and this was the only reason we agreed to purchase that phone anyway. The Vortex won’t work outside of the USA. So this really screws things up. I never wanted that droid global phone coz I found it monstrous and masculine, but since it was free then I agreed. So I don’t want to get stuck with that phone and then Tim gets a phone he can’t use overseas. So we decide to swap phones instead. I get the Vortex and he gets the Global which works out fine, but still it sucks coz the Vortex is black and I wouldn’t have picked it in black if I could’ve gotten it in purple or just gotten a blackberry or iPhone instead or something. Tim doesn’t mind using the white droid. I guess this is the moment where you can prove that women are irrational because here I am complaining that I am going to use a black phone. It’s just a color I know, but hey its my phone and I deserve to like it.

In the end, I blame Verizon for everything because we wouldn’t have been in this predicament if they had been honest with us in the first place.

Anyway now I have two extra cases for the Droid Global in pink and purple.. if anyone wants it I am willing to trade anything for it, even chocolates. Let me know πŸ™‚

I haven’t even landed yet and its already -1 for Team USA. Boo Verizon!

But because my fiance is so thoughtful in getting me a phone, I’ll give a +1 so its even now πŸ™‚

But I totally get it. It’s annoying when you’ve prepared only to get stuck with something you weren’t even particularly happy to begin with. I feel you! Don’t worry. haha
