Farewell First Trimester!

I can’t believe I am already 13 weeks and 5 days!! Woohoo! Though I’m not going to lie, getting to this point felt like forever. Since this is my first pregnancy, it’s definitely been a wild ride. Everything is new, uncertain and each day brings a new set of challenges and concerns. At the end of the day though, I am still so happy and grateful to have this chance to experience the journey of pregnancy. As I wrap up my first trimester, I’d like to chronicle all the little signs and symptoms I felt along the way! Hopefully someone out there reading this will be able to relate to my experiences, and this is a good way for me to look back and remember what I had to go through to get to this point. So here goes!

June 5, 2012- Week 4

This was when I found out I was pregnant. I found out pretty early! Major signs for me were a missed period, some weird cramping, breast soreness and spotting. All this led me to buy a pregnancy test, and lo and behold it was positive!! It was so surreal back then, I don’t think it even really registered to me until much much later. At that point, I was just kind of in a daze and very nervous! I hate how websites and forums all lead you to become so paranoid and scared because they always talk about the chances and risks for miscarriage and I was just so nervous and worried all the time. I do know that there is pretty much nothing you can do to make it happen, or not happen.. so for you future moms out there, just enjoy the ride! Remember that your chances of not miscarrying are much higher, and as long as you eat right and live a healthy lifestyle, then all you can really do is wait it out! This was also the week I called the hospital to set up an appointment, but they wouldn’t see me till another month! That was upsetting to me, but I guess that’s how it works in the US. In the Philippines, you can see a doctor whenever you want, but here, they wouldn’t see me till I was further along. I was also scared because my periods were irregular, so I knew I couldn’t base my due date on my LMP.

Here’s me at that time at my roomie’s wedding!! πŸ™‚

Week 5

Still surreal, still no major symptoms except for the cramping and breast soreness. Β I also had some chills, like I was always cold. At this point I told my family and close friends in school. πŸ™‚

Week 6

Same as week 5. At this week I began to feel some nausea, but it was manageable. The cramping stopped, thankfully! I wasn’t upchucking everything just yet. I also told my clinic supervisor and my professor who was in charge of handling my externships, because I knew that my externship would be affected since I’ll be giving birth in the spring! I was so scared to tell her but she was actually so nice and supportive about it. πŸ™‚ We also told Tim’s family! They were also very happy for us.

Week 7

Big week for me! First doctor’s appointment and dating u/s so we can get my accurate due date. We saw the heartbeat on the u/s and the baby looked like a little bean! My first doctor’s appointment was 2 hours long, and they took about 5 vials of blood and did a whole bunch of tests. They also got a urine sample to check for UTI and to make sure I was pregnant. They did a long interview to get my history and explained how their hospital works. For the first and second trimester, I would have monthly check-ups, routine ultrasounds and I could call whenever I had a concern. They were great and made me feel so much at ease!

This was also the same week that I had to be hospitalized and given an IV because I was throwing up so much! My morning sickness turned out to be all-day sickness and I couldn’t hold anything down. I was prescribed Zofran to alleviate my nausea.

Week 8-9

TMI alert- I began to have major nausea and constipation issues! The dehydration and Zofran really got to me! I had to start taking Colace, and even had to resort to a glycerin suppository. Not fun!!

Week 10

2nd appointment. We got to hear the heartbeat on the doppler! I still haven’t gained any weight (probably due to the nausea) but all seemed to be going well. I decided to go for the Nuchal Translucency Test. I was so nervous! It was also at this point that pregnancy acne started rearing its ugly head! 😦

Week 11-12

Anxiously awaiting my NT test. I began to be active on cafemom (great mom forum!). Nausea still kicking my butt, but I definitely had more good days than bad days.. It wasn’t as bad as it was from week 7-10. I also started wearing maternity pants just because they were so much more comfy! I was able to get great deals on Ebay πŸ™‚

Me and the hubby at a wedding. I definitely look more tired and blotchy. Bump isn’t so visible yet!

Week 13

First Trimester Screen and NT test! I was a nervous wreck. The genetic counselor met with us and got a long history from both Timmy and I. They got my bloodwork and explained that they would be checking for some chromosomal abnormalities. The results came were clear. πŸ™‚ On the ultrasound, the baby looked great! Heartbeat was loud and proud. We were able to get great shots of the baby! The sonographer even guessed that it was a boy. πŸ™‚ Β Here are some of baby’s shots. πŸ™‚

Here’s to hoping the rest of the pregnancy will be smooth sailing!! πŸ™‚

Steph! Thank you so much for posting in details how the pregnancy has been, and I just saw cafemom, seems like a very good website to share doubts and information. And yes, thank you also for posting about how the forums normally make you so worried about miscarriages! Congratulations on your beautiful pregnancy Steph! Flor

      Hey Flor!
No prob! Do you have kids? Cafemom has tons of groups, from those trying to conceive, those who are first time moms, even moms with the same due date as you.. its pretty cool!
